Rakaki - Stin Ygia Mas (To Our Health AKA Cheers!)

Our feast at Rakaki
It was right after I graduated, and I'd been waiting for this reward for nearly two years...the time had finally come! In May 2012, Carlos and I left all our worries behind and traveled to my wonderful land of Greece. Our first stop was in Athens.

When we landed, we were greeted with open arms by our dear cousin's Ariadni and Dimitris. Truth be told, I hadn't seen Ariadni in 15 years...but luckily we were able to keep in touch through Facebook. They asked if we were tired and we replied "NO WAY! We're on vacation, we don't get tired!" They responded, "Good, because we made reservations at Rakaki".

With an open mind, an open heart, and open soul - we began our first adventure in Greece. There was a table reserved for us outside on the pavement (sidewalk seating is the norm in Greece). The cozy atmosphere, which is situated behind Kaisariani Square, was very inviting. Rakaki serves traditional Cretan cuisine and plenty of Raki (a strong, clear alcohol made from grapes).

We sat for hours catching up on lost time: telling stories, eating incredible mezethes (Greek Appetizers), and drinking chilled Rakaki. Time was no issue, worries were forgotten, and our dreams were gradually becoming reality! Though Ariadni and Dimitris are cousin's, we became more than family on that first memorable night at Rakaki - we became friends for a lifetime.

I suggest you all visit the restaurant if you're ever in Athens - I swear on my Greek Honor - you WON'T be dissapointed!
